The SME publication highlights major market trends, processes, and technologies driving success in the aerospace and defense manufacturing markets. The cover story of the 2017 Annual Yearbook features the ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research in Hamburg, Germany.
ZAL is a state-of-the-art aerospace research facility where emerging technologies are matured towards commercial production applications. LSPT is installing a Procudo® Laser Peening System at the ZAL TechCenter to advance research on the fatigue enhancement applications of laser shock peening. The system also offers European manufacturers newfound accessibility to perform laser peening research and development on high-energy production laser peening equipment.
Roland Gerhard, CEO of ZAL TechCenter explained the attraction of bringing laser peening and LSP Technologies to ZAL:
“LSPT has this really exciting, new technology, and we’re going to closely collaborate with them to establish their technology here in Europe… It will be available to all partners is Europe.”
“Laser shock peening… is much more precise, deeper in the material layers, much more detailed (than shot peening).”
Laser peening is a powerful surface enhancement application that extends component service life as much as 10X compared to shot peening. Laser peening produces deep compressive residual stresses – as deep as 12 mm in some applications – providing superior protection against fatigue, cracking and failure in metal components.
