Research employs Procudo® Laser Peening System

Hamburg, Germany – October 10, 2018 — The ZAL Center of Aeronautical Research in Hamburg hosted public officials, university researchers, and corporate partners, including LSP Technologies, Inc. for a Grand Opening of the Laser Peening commercial research and development cells today.
The ZAL Center employs the Procudo® Laser Peening System developed by LSP Technologies and delivered in 2017, the first and only commercially available laser peening system. Under a collaborative agreement, ZAL, LSP Technologies and Airbus will share time on the laser peening equipment, offering many opportunities for new projects and customer applications.

A major ZAL investment

The speakers at the Grand Opening included Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of the city and state of Hamburg, Roland Gerhards, CEO of ZAL, and Jeff Dulaney, President and CEO of LSP Technologies. The laser peening system represents the single largest investment of ZAL in new aviation components technology.
“I was involved personally in building ZAL,” Mayor Tschentscher said. “Keep the great ideas coming!” One in six airliners worldwide is built in Hamburg, he noted. “Industrial and scientific research come together here to be implemented in practical innovation,” he added. “The success of ZAL is contributing to making Hamburg’s reputation in the fields of applied research and aviation even stronger.”
LSP Technologies seeks to be the technology leader in providing commercial laser peening systems and services globally, said Dulaney. “I cannot overstate the significance of our collaboration with ZAL in achieving our vision,” Dulaney said. “To achieve the potential of laser peening technology requires nurturing from precisely the kind of partnership and collaboration available through ZAL.
“At ZAL, we can see aviation benefiting from so many developments, including laser peening, robotics, computer modelling and powerful data management tools, even futuristic visions of what passengers will experience in flight.”

Cutting edge aviation research

“With the inauguration of this laser shock peening technology, leading-edge research in Hamburg has reached yet another new level. This is also true in terms of the city’s international profile. The new facility is an example of successful transatlantic cooperation and the open innovation culture that underpins ZAL,” said Roland Gerhards, CEO of ZAL Center for Applied Aeronautical Research GmbH.
LSP Technologies VP of Business Development David Lahrman provided attendees with an overview of laser peening technology development, commercial equipment now available from LSP Technologies, and the significant safety, reliability, and cost advantages of laser peening for the aviation industry.
